Project overview
75 KW COMPRESSOR FAULT INVESTIGATION
Power quality monitoring used to investigate intermittent supply fuse operation and MCCB tripping on a 75 kW industrial compressor.

Customer need
An industrial manufacturing customer was experiencing an intermittent fault on a 75 kW compressor, causing blown supply fuses and MCCB tripping. The fault could not be reproduced during the initial callout, so further monitoring was required to capture the electrical conditions when the fault occurred.
What we did
- Completed an initial electrical fault investigation.
- Returned with a power quality analyser when the fault could not initially be replicated.
- Captured the intermittent fault during motor startup and compared it with normal starting conditions.
- Identified sustained high starting current for approximately 10 seconds before the MCCB tripped.
- Discussed the results with the compressor manufacturer, identifying the load/unload valve for further inspection.
How it helped
Capturing the fault provided evidence that was unavailable during the initial inspection. Comparing normal and fault starts narrowed the issue to abnormal load during startup and gave the compressor manufacturer useful information for assessing the suspected load/unload valve fault.

Generator harmonic distortion investigation
What we didAnalysed harmonic distortion within the generator-connected electrical system.
How it helpedWhile the cause of the intermittent generator fault was not pinpointed, the investigation confirmed that harmonic distortion was within acceptable limits.
